Technology

Engineered to outlast every service.

With more than 40 years in glass production and machinery development, Luxem is an engineering company that happens to make beautiful glassware. Every piece passes through a tempering line our own engineers designed and built: four zones, one continuous flow, up to 150,000 pieces a day. The general arrangement below is as much as we show in public.

Glass 101

The same glass. A different kind of strength.

Almost all everyday drinkware starts as soda-lime glass. What turns it into Luxem glass is not what it is made of, but what happens to it after it is formed.

Ordinary glass

Soda-lime glass

The most widely used glass in the world: silica sand, soda ash and limestone, melted, formed and then cooled slowly to relieve internal stress. It is clear, food-safe and recyclable, but chips and cracks easily, dislikes sudden temperature changes, and breaks into large, sharp shards.

Luxem glass

Fully tempered soda-lime glass

The same composition, given a second, precisely controlled heat treatment: reheated close to its softening point, then rapidly cooled with air. This locks the surface into compression, making the glass up to six times stronger, far more resistant to thermal shock, and safer when it does break.

How tempering works

Simple on the surface. Engineered underneath.

Tempering heats glass to a high temperature, then cools it rapidly under tight control. It looks simple; it takes precise control of temperature, time and airflow. Scroll to follow each step.

Uniform heating to ≈ 620 °CCross-section of a glass wall
01

Heating

Each formed piece is heated evenly until the glass is just below its softening point. A heating profile calculated for every shape keeps the temperature consistent from rim to base.

02

Rapid quenching

Air jets cool the surface within seconds. The surface sets while the core is still hot. Pressure and timing are tuned to the wall thickness of each form.

03

Balanced stress

As the core cools and contracts, it pulls the surface inward. The result is permanent compressive stress at the surface and tensile stress in the core. A crack can only grow once that compression is overcome.

04

Strength and safety

The glass is just as thin, yet up to six times stronger. And under extreme impact it breaks into small, blunt fragments instead of sharp shards.

Proprietary technology

Introducing TempX.

TempX is Luxem's own tempering technology, developed and refined in-house by our engineering team. It takes everything that makes tempered glass strong and pushes it further: a more even stress profile, from rim to base, on every form we make.

Our engineers also designed and built the machine that runs it: a new-generation tempering system with a capacity of up to 150,000 pieces a day. Production runs under the Luxem licence, directly supervised by the Luxem technical team.

How it works is not something we publish. The heating curves, quench settings and line configuration stay inside our walls. What leaves the factory is the result.

  • Up to 6× stronger
  • 150,000 pieces a day
  • 30 t container test

Testing

We don't claim durability. We measure it.

Intertek

Independent approval

Luxem's fully tempered quality has been tested and approved by Intertek, one of the world's leading testing, inspection and certification companies.

Safety breakage design

If it ever breaks, it breaks safely.

Excellent fragmentation in the walls and good fragmentation at the base: under an impact strong enough to break through the tempered surface, a Luxem glass shatters into small, blunt pieces instead of sharp shards, reducing the risk of injury.

Tested to the extreme

Don't take our word for it. Watch.

Real tests on real Luxem glass: the same mugs and tumblers that go to our customers, with no special samples and no tricks.
